In this work, Jennifer Keeler-Milne pays tribute to the acacia blossoms, commonly known as wattle, Australia’s national floral emblem (Acacia pycnantha). Inspired by the natural environment of her homeland, which is home to more than a thousand species of acacia, the artist celebrates National Wattle Day, officially established on 1 September 1992.
Executed in oil on canvas, the painting appears strikingly realistic from a distance, yet up close reveals a soft, sfumato-like surface, where subtle blurring and layered textures convey the delicacy and materiality of the blossoms.
Through her luminous yellow tones, symbols of joy and renewal, Jennifer Keeler-Milne evokes both the beauty of spring and the deep connection between Australians and their environment. Her painting continues a national tradition that emerged in the nineteenth century, when the wattle became a symbol of unity and Australian pride.
