The Mimih spirits hold a central place in the mythology, culture, and art of the Aboriginal people of Arnhem Land in Northern Australia. They are air deities said to dwell in rocks or caves.
According to tradition, they were a kind of demiurge who gave birth to humankind, taught them laws and customs, and instructed them in medicine, song, and painting. It is even said that they depicted themselves on the ceilings of the caves in which they lived.
