Unlike the Aborigines living on the Australian mainland, the Aborigines of the Torres Strait Islands were a warrior people. Anyone who trespassed on their island risked having their head cut off.
Dennis Nona depicts warriors under the command of Waii and Soibai preparing to fight to protect their territory from attackers from a neighboring island. They dance in honor of the spirits of battle: by spinning around while singing and striking the ground with their spears, the men become dizzy and forget their fears.
