Australia is made up of two native peoples: the Aborigines who populated the Australian continent, and the inhabitants of the Torres Strait.  Dennis Nona's work is a perfect illustration of this culture, which in some ways is reminiscent of the art of the Papuans of nearby New Guinea.

In this linocut, we are told the legend of Ubirikubiri the crocodile. The crocodile was captured as a baby by a man who wanted to give it to his daughter. He was kept in an enclosure, but one day his master forgot to feed him. When he returned, Ubirikubiri killed him in revenge, put him on his back and carried him to a river. This legend teaches the inhabitants of the Torres Strait that if you want to domesticate a wild animal, you have to treat it well.
