This linocut by Dennis Nona tells the legend of Sesserae, the cunning young man who transformed himself into a bird to protect himself from villagers jealous of his secret hunting technique. But this tale also explains how the islanders of the Torres Strait received the gift of catching and cooking dugongs (a type of manatee), as well as building a “nath”—a fishing platform erected at sea on the beds of seaweed that dugongs feed on.
