Mary Butcher Napangardi presents in these paintings a version of the Pikilyi Dream, a sacred site featuring a waterhole and a creek not far from Yuendumu. According to legend, a pair of Rainbow Serpents lived there. Women would remove lice attached to the bodies of these mythical beings, and in return, they were granted the right to take water from the creek.
Aborigines still hold ceremonies at this site, where the spirit of the two serpents continues to reside. On the canvas, the wavy lines represent the flowing water of the creek, while the black teardrop-shaped forms likely symbolize the lice that clung to the serpents.
