The highly graphic composition of this bark painting, with its restrained motifs set against a dark background, is very characteristic of the art from Groote Eylandt. The colours used, the nature of the pigments, and the blend of figuration and abstraction are also representative of bark paintings from this island located east of Arnhem Land.
In this piece, the artist Nandabitta depicts seabirds on the lookout. The central section of the work evokes the ocean currents that bring in fish. These are suggested through the wake they leave in the water, as well as by the depiction of their tails.
