Originally from Yuendumu in the central Australian desert, Kenneth Martin JUNGARRAYI's work takes us to the heart of the complex clan networks that govern the social and spiritual life of the Aborigines, as well as to the Dreamtime - the mythical time of the world's creation.
The social structures of the desert are based on a kinship system that assigns each member of society a place in one of eight possible kinship groups.
These groups are arranged in pairs, each pair jointly preserving the themes of the art: the land, ceremonies and dreams. In this painting, Kenneth Martin tells the story of two paired female groups, the Napaltjarri and the Nungarrayi, and two paired male groups, the Japaltjarri and the Jungarrayi.
Here, he celebrates the sacred site of Yangarnmpi, south of Yuendumu, associated with the Dream of the Parakeet, or Ngatijirri, a species endemic to Central Australia. Humans seek out the nests of these birds to take the eggs and chicks they love.
