Legend has it that in the Dreamtime - the time of creation for the Aborigines - the Ngatijirri (parakeets) set off on a journey from the east of Yuendumu towards the west. Each time the group of ancestral birds reached their destination, they celebrated ceremonies with song and dance.
The small black crosses represent the footprints left by the many birds on the ground, because after a season of abundant rain, the Ngatijirri can reproduce several times, resulting in an explosion of the population in a short space of time.
