‘In this sculpture, the dugong evokes the inverted shape of a canoe. In calm weather, people in these traditional boats follow the dugongs by paddling in a gentle current called Guathath Yamaral to reach the marshes. Today's fibreglass dinghies (boats) also paddle, as this work shows; I included the paddles to refer to the dugong hunting platform (Nath), which can be seen reconstructed in the centre of the exhibition or in the Sesserae engraving. Compared with canoe hunting, the Nath is another method of dugong hunting. Using this platform built on the reef is the traditional way of hunting dugongs.  (Dennis Nona)
