Valma White Nakamarra’s painting depicts both the “Seven Sisters Dreaming” (Napaljarri-Warnu Jukurrpa) and the “Star Dreaming” (Yanjirlpirri Jukurrpa).
The “Seven Sisters Dreaming” refers to the seven stars of the Taurus constellation, also known as the Pleiades, which represent seven ancestral sisters of the Napaljarri clan. A member of the Jakamarra group, Jukurra-Jukurra, symbolized by the Morning Star, falls in love with them and is typically shown pursuing them across the sky. To escape him, the Seven Sisters transformed into flames and ascended to the heavens, becoming stars.
