Throughout his childhood, Alick Tipoti followed the teachings of his island's elders and chose sculpture and engraving as his mediums to pass on his people's culture to new generations. Here, we are talking about multiple species of turtles, or murai. They can grow to very different sizes and are a delicacy much appreciated by the islanders, who cook them in earth ovens called amai. Fishing is carried out in a sustainable manner so that the species are not threatened with extinction.
