The Mamoose chief is chosen by the members of the Kwod. He is a speaker who addresses matters of law and trade before the celebrations begin. He outlines and reminds the audience of the conventions of their society, how things are, how they must remain, and how they should be passed down to future generations. Mamoose ensures that traditions are taught and upheld, taking these moments to repeat again and again: "Wherever you go, your culture and your language are your identity."

Certain words are only used on such occasions, and people know they must not be spoken in public – this serves as a reminder that using one’s language properly is of great importance. Mamoose wears a hat with stars on its top, as stars help identify constellations.
