Gloria Gill is from one of the best-known artistic communities in Australia's Central Desert, Yuendumu, where contemporary Aboriginal painting emerged in the 1970s alongside Papunya.
Like most Aboriginal painters, Gloria evokes a story from the Dreamtime - the time of creation for the Aborigines - during which mythical beings (the Lightning Men, the Rainbow Python, the yam, etc.) created Australia and founded the moral, religious and spiritual laws that still govern Aboriginal culture today. Here, we're talking about the dream (Jukurrpa) of the Native Seed (Ngurlu). This edible seed comes from the Lukarrara, a grass that grows in the Central Desert. The Aborigines crush these seeds to obtain flour with which they make bread rolls.
