In this painting, Eileen Napaltjarri depicts the story of Kungka Kutjara ('Two Women’) from the Dreamtime.
Two sisters travel across the desert from west to east, facing dunes and arid lands. The younger sister follows her elder sister, despite her desire to return home.
Near a waterhole, they transform into serpents, weaving under the rain, represented by parallel lines, among men’s camps, depicted as U-shaped forms on either side of concentric circles symbolising fire.
Eileen's distinctive style is evident in the thick, textured paint and luminous palette of beiges and oranges, which are contrasted with black outlines of traditional motifs. This blend of mythical narrative and tangible landscape is characteristic of her work.
