In this painting, Julie Yatitja depicts the creek of her home town, Iwantja, in South Australia, 415km south of Alice Springs.
Iwantja is the origin of the story of the tjurki or native owl. It is a symbol of the birth of the Indulkana Aboriginal community. The area is protected from the sun by gum trees, and there are numerous waterholes.
The owl, which had travelled all the way to Iwantja, nested at the top of a huge gum tree to watch over the creek's inhabitants.
