In the region around Maningrida, several Aboriginal groups live alongside supernatural beings such as the Mimih, whose veneration has been the focus of religious ceremonies since time immemorial.

Aborigines believe that these spirits have a social organization similar to their own and that the Mimih society existed before humans.

The Mimih are said to have taught people how to hunt and butcher game, as well as how to dance, sing, and paint.

The body of this sculpture is decorated with crosshatch patterns reminiscent of the body paintings used during religious ceremonies.

This work comes with certificates of authenticity from the Maningrida Arts & Culture Centre (No. 22-15) and from the gallery Arts d’Australie • Stéphane Jacob, expert in Aboriginal art.
