According to the Kunwinjku people of western Arnhem Land, the Mimih spirits were the first spiritual beings who taught Aboriginal people many of the skills necessary for survival in the bush. They also taught certain aspects of ceremonial practice.
Mimih spirits are believed to inhabit the rocky escarpments around Gunbalanya, but being extremely shy, they are rarely seen by humans. They are often depicted in Arnhem Land rock art as small, dynamic figures, frequently accompanied by an array of hunting tools such as spears, spear-throwers, dilly bags, and firesticks.
