The boomerang is the first flying instrument heavier than air to have been invented by humans. Boomerangs are generally made from a piece of wood carved from an acacia or eucalyptus branch. The shape is first rough-hewn with an axe, then heated over a wood fire and bent into its familiar shape. Finally, the boomerang is worked with a flint, polished, and sometimes painted.

The Aboriginals had many uses for the boomerang: hunting, games, and music. Thus, the boomerang can take different forms depending on its use.
