In Niah’s work, even the titles of her paintings contribute to the story. She recounts significant moments and memories through a codified system of symbols, each associated with a word in her language. With each shape or symbol added, so to is a word added to the title. Little by little, a narrative emerges. This painting, for example is called Bana Gugaa, combining two elements of Niah’s visual lexicon. Bana means rain, which she depicts through fine, sometimes undulating lines that evoke images of flowing water. Gugaa, refers to both the rings of the stringy bark tree, which she depicts with concentric circles, and the texture of its fibrous bark. Bana Gugaa thus evokes the image of rain trickling down eucalyptus trunks, and can be translated as rain on the stringy bark.
