Dennis Nona, a Torres Strait Islander artist from northern Australia, is celebrated as one of the most original and innovative figures in contemporary Australian art.

Born on Badu Island in 1973, he learned traditional wood carving as a child. While pursuing a university degree in visual arts, he won the prestigious Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2007 with a monumental crocodile in bronze and mother-of-pearl, becoming the youngest recipient and the first Torres Strait Islander to earn this distinction. He won the award again in 2008, 2010, and 2011, making him the only Australian artist to receive it four times.

Dennis Nona is a pioneer of the highly detailed linocut technique unique to the Torres Strait Islands. His work vividly brings to life the ancestral legends and myths of his island and wider region, stories that were traditionally passed down orally and through dance.
