‘Amal’ is the name given by the islanders to the shadow formed by a cloud on the sea when they go turtle or dugong hunting.
If the cloud reflected on the surface of the water is too close to the fisherman's canoe, he will no longer be able to spot his prey and therefore harpoon it.
Hunters who come back empty-handed say there has been too much Amal.
The Amal is in fact the protector of the turtle and dugong.
