“Amal” is the name given by islanders to the shadow cast by a cloud over the sea when they go hunting for turtles or dugongs. If the cloud reflected on the water's surface is too close to the fisherman's canoe, he will no longer be able to spot his prey and therefore harpoon it. Hunters who return empty-handed say there was too much Amal. Amal is in fact the protector of turtles and dugongs.
