Originally from Balgo Hills (Western Australia), Susie Bootja-Bootja evokes in her paintings the landscapes of the Great Sandy Desert on the edge of which Balgo is situated, a former Catholic mission where, in the 1930s, the Aborigines expelled from their ancestral lands were gathered. For the artist and the other painters of Balgo, this art of the desert is therefore also an art of remembrance, since it is a question of perpetuating through painting the memory of territories that are indeed adorned with the shimmering and naive colours of a lost paradise.
