Dorothy Napangardi was a leading Aboriginal painter from the Yuendumu community whose work is regularly exhibited in Australia, the United States and Europe. Considered one of the leading artists of the contemporary Aboriginal art movement, Dorothy Napangardi's work is highly prized by collectors and curators worldwide. She has won numerous awards for her work, including first place in the prestigious Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in Australia in 1991 in the "best painting" category and then in 2001 as best publishing artist.
Dorothy's work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Musée des Confluences (Lyon), the Seattle Museum of Art (USA), the Linden Museum (Stuttgart), the National Gallery of Australia (Canberra), the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne), the Art Gallery of South Australia (Adelaide) and many other institutions around the world. The Louvre-Lens is no exception, presenting in its latest exhibition - SOLEILS NOIRS - alongside works by Kandinski, Botticelli, Matisse, Malevitch, Delacroix, Courbet, Rodin, Soulages and Odilon Redon, the painting by Dorothy acquired by the Musée des Confluences in 2009 thanks to the patronage of Métropole Gestion.
Roslyn Premont was very close to Dorothy, so the catalogue published in her honour is packed with previously unpublished photos: moments spent in the artist's native land, exhibition openings, trips abroad and so on.
