Dilly bags are traditional baskets normally made from woven pandanus leaves. These bags are crafted in the wooded regions of northern Australia and have been used since time immemorial by Aboriginal people to carry the fruits of their harvests. Their manufacture requires a high level of skill, which is a craft mastered by women who pass on their knowledge from generation to generation.
Here, the artist has chosen to change the type of medium used, employing ghostnets instead of plant fibers. Ghostnets are fishing nets that have been accidentally lost, abandoned, or simply thrown into the sea and are found washed up in large numbers on Australian shores.
This new medium allows for the creation of more colorful bags while combining ancestral cultural practices with more contemporary issues, particularly ecological ones.
