Don Djorlom has created a sculpture of Yawkyawk here. Sometimes compared to the Western representation of mermaids (usually with a fish tail), they are spiritual beings living in freshwater streams and rocky pools, particularly those in the stone country. These spirits have long hair, associated with green algae growths. Sometimes they leave their aquatic habitat to walk on dry land, especially at night. Today, the Kuninjku believe that the Ngalkunburriyaymi (the human form of the Yawkyawk) are very much alive and live in freshwater sites in a number of sacred places.
