Wolpa Wanambi depicts a hero from the mythical Dreamtime: Wuyal. This Great Ancestor of the Yrrkala Aboriginal people (the Marrakulu) was a hunter who pursued small kangaroos (rock wallabies) that lived in the vicinity of Mount Saunders, near a site that became sacred called Nhulunbuy.

The background, with its dotted and hatched patterns, symbolizes the Nhulunbuy region, offering a kind of map made up of a collection of ritual forms: these forms and the patterns that decorate them are directly inspired by the religious paintings of the region.
