Helicopter Tjungurrayi is a leading aboriginal artist from Balgo Hills artistic community. His use of vivid colors is in keeping with the tradition of this "school" between hills and desert, whose artists celebrate their various sites as heavenly places.
Here, the sites are represented by three sacred waterholes, or tjurrnu, near which the artist was born. We can focus on Balgo painters' predilection for bright yellows, oranges and reds to evoke, in the form of lines, a set of sand dunes (or tali).
The interplay of lines and the warm palette used draw the visitor into an astonishing optical game. Much more than a simple visual effect, the work sacralizes the vital force of this land.
