Western painter William Robinson, known for his fragmented style, created very few ceramics. In this remarkable piece, striking for its deliberately kitsch and rococo look, he offers a humorous critique of the myth of the handsome Australian swimmer: under the gaze of an androgynous mermaid who will not come to their aid, frightened bathers unable to surf the waves are doomed to drown in the basin where the artist has placed them.
