Like most Arnhem Land artists, Peter Maralwanga uses the rarrk motif, derived from Mardayin ceremonies, to adorn his creations. The Rainbow Serpent is the protector of the land, the people and the source of all life. It can also be a destructive power if not respected properly. A mythical figure, the first appearances of the Rainbow Serpent in cave paintings date from 6000 to 8000 BC.
