Originally from Utopia, northeast of Alice Springs, Gladys Kemmare belongs to a school of painters who celebrate the mysteries of the creation of the universe according to the Aboriginal people. The memory of this creation was passed down to the Aboriginal people by the Great Ancestors in the form of “dreams” that initiates must pass on from generation to generation. Originally, they did this by creating large paintings on the ground at the place where the myth was celebrated. This work is inspired by that tradition.
Gladys is known for her depictions of her country, called Arlperre on Utopia, which she often portrays through a technique of sharp, random dots. Her works often represent an aerial view of her country and reflect the incredible cartographic nature of many paintings from the central desert.
