The boat, but also the relationship with the sea and his father are recurring motifs in Macleod's work. This work, ‘Untitled’, is a tribute to the father, to the indelible mark left by his absence. His father, who died of Alzheimer's a few months before this painting was completed, is a ghostly presence who has gradually, slowly, inevitably abandoned the ship and life.
