In her work, Melissa Lewis respects the traditional iconography of the Desert. She shapes her piece using the sgrafitto technique: she applies a coloured slip to the raw piece. Once the slip has dried, she engraves the motif, revealing the clay beneath. The decoration is formed by the difference in colour between the slip and the unglazed clay, before it is fired.
