A native New Zealander, he evolves at the crossroads of Maori culture, from which he is descended, and Western culture. This dual identity is an essential component of his work, which he describes as “mixed”. His work reflects a constant dialogue between these two heritages, blending ancestral traditions with contemporary influences. For him, the image is materially made up of paint, and its conceptual meaning is inseparable from the way it is executed. His work is characterized by a vibrant, intense palette, giving his compositions a strong visual dynamic, while preserving a deep, contemplative serenity. He is perhaps best known for his symbolist paintings, inspired by the rituals of Maori painting. His art is based on a repertoire of recurring motifs, including feathers, animals and human figures. These elements, carefully integrated into his compositions, contribute to the narrative richness of his work. However, he does not limit himself to this symbolist aspect, and has also produced several series of abstract paintings, in which he explores a more refined, minimalist approach. These sober canvases testify to the diversity of his artistic expression.
