Dennis Nona says he was inspired by all the masks brought back from the Torres Strait Islands that he saw in England, at the Cambridge Museum. This engraving evokes the feeling he experienced surrounded by all these masks, as if the artist found himself under the gaze of all his ancestors.
Dennis also says he sought the help of the spirits, according to custom: “When you see ancient objects, you must observe them and ask them to accompany you, to grant you their help and protection.”
The visit to the museum took place in 2000, but this work was completed in 2005. Sometimes several years pass between an event and its visual translation.
