“Nudaik refers to a traditional hunting practice of the Maluiligal (inhabitants of the Torres Strait). When a manatee has been harpooned, a rope is tied around its tail, and it is then used as bait. By shouting, it sends sound vibrations through the water. This attracts other manatees. When another animal is targeted, the hunters repeat the operation using the wap (harpoon), kuyur (arrow), and amu (rope). This engraving also shows the spiritual connection between the hunters and their food source. The hunters' reflections are slightly different from their silhouettes in the dugout canoe. When they come into contact with the ancestral spirits of the past, these reflections become the spirits of the aquatic world that guide the manatees and choose the best and healthiest among them."
