Loretta White Nakamarra is an artist from Yuendumu in the Central Desert. Her work is entitled Nguru Yurntumu-wana, which translates as the landscape around Yuendumu.
The artist represents the bush that surrounds his community. It is a landscape made up of trees, watiya, grasses, marna, animals to hunt and plants to gather. Yuendumu is also surrounded by numerous natural features such as rocks, waterholes and so on.
The natural formations of the landscape are associated by the inhabitants of the community with sacred sites and dreams, jukurrpa. These include a major site called Yunkaranyi jukurrpa, associated with the Dream of the Honey Ant. Yuendumu is sometimes nicknamed Yurrampi, honey ant, for this reason.
In this work, Loretta White Nakamarra uses the method of dot painting, or pointillism, inspired by the floor paintings traditionally produced for ritual ceremonies.
