According to the legend, during the Dreamtime, the creation period for Aboriginal people, the Ngatijirri (parrots) embarked on a journey from east of Yuendumu toward the west. Each time the ancestral group of birds reached their destination, they held ceremonies, singing and dancing.
The small black crosses represent the footprints left by the birds, abundant on the clay soil. After a season of heavy rains, the Ngatijirri can breed multiple times, leading to a rapid population increase.
