Originally from Yuendumu in the Central Desert, Kathy Bagot Napangardi here depicts the Water Dream (Ngapa Jukurrpa) associated with the sacred site of Puyurru, located west of her community.
Because this Dream holds sacred significance, the artists share only the version taught to children. The version presented here intertwines multiple dreams - or dream tracks - that cross paths during the journeys of various ancestors. The story told by this painting begins with two rainmakers from the Jangala family, who called the rain through their songs, triggering a massive storm. The storm traveled across their clan’s territory, accompanied by the thunderous sound of lightning.
The concentric circle is a symbol used for millennia by Central Desert Aboriginal people. It represents sacred sites, as is the case here with Puyurru.
