Ada Pula Beasley is an Aboriginal painter from the Ampilatwaja community in the Central Desert (Northern Territory). While opting for a seemingly classic subject, Ada Pula breaks away from the codes of traditional painting by opting for figuration, whereas most desert artists work in an abstract manner, evoking their territory through a series of symbols. This choice of a more realistic representation is common to several artists from the Ampilatwaja community and contributes to its influence. What's more, Ada Pula is not referring here to the Dreamtime (the mythical time when the ancestors created the world), as is generally the case in Aboriginal painting. Instead, her works are dedicated to the local flora, made up of edible plants, but also and above all medicinal plants that form a veritable pharmacopoeia used in traditional local medicine.
