Originally from Arnhem Land (Northern Australia), Clara Wubqwubuk began painting in the early 1980s after being introduced to the practice by her father-in-law.
Clara Wubqwubuk affirms her connection to her Country. In her work, she uses the traditional medium of eucalyptus bark to evoke, with natural pigments, her totem : the Munyigani (yam). The yam is also one of the great ancestral plant beings for several Aboriginal groups.
In a style composed of fluid and sensual lines, she highlights the extraordinary strength of this plant, whose bulges and constrictions further enhance the sense of vitality.
