Malungu refers to the sea in the Kala Lagaw Ya language of the Maluilgal people of Zenadh Kes (Torres Strait). This engraving shows two hunters returning to their island after going out to sea to hunt Dhangal (dugong) and Waru (turtle). The patterns in the sky represent Zibazib (sunset) after a full day of hunting at sea, or Bani (dawn) in the dark night just before daylight. Both animals were caught using a traditional method, with a wap (harpoon) placed on the shoulder of the Buai Garka (hunter). Note the Kuyuri (arrows) stuck in the backs of the animals.
