Numbulwar is an Aboriginal community located in the Gulf of Carpentaria, southeast of Arnhem Land. In this tropical region grows the pandanus spiralis, a shrub whose long, spiny leaves are harvested by hand by Aboriginal women. They extract the fibers, dye them with natural dyes from the local flora, and then dry them in the sun. This ancestral craftsmanship reflects a deep knowledge of the environment and intergenerational cultural transmission.
The fibers are woven to create brightly colored mats with varied patterns inspired by the land. Each piece is unique and bears the marks of the artist's culture and region. Once conical or triangular in shape and used in everyday life, mats are now often round and made for decorative purposes, while retaining their symbolic value.
