Born in Pakistan in 1954 to Australian parents, G.W. BOT lived in many countries until the age of twenty, following her father who was in the military. She studied art in London, Paris, and Australia. In the manner of the Australian Aborigines, she chose a totem animal, the wombat, a mammal endemic to Australia.

In this linocut work, GW BOT clearly refers to a passage from Genesis (2:9): “Out of the ground, the Lord God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. The tree of life, also, was in the midst of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” (The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."

The composition is very fine, dense, and delicate, imbued with spirituality: This work highlights the artist's interest in silence and contemplation.
