Roy Wiggan, a senior leader of the Bardi people, is the only one authorized to create "ilmas"—painted plywood panels combined with wool weavings worn by dancers during religious ceremonies that recount the deeds of the Great Ancestors in the Dreamtime. Their geometric shapes, of extreme variety (circles, stars, crosses, arcs), result from highly elaborate combinations that seem to materialize traditional ground painting patterns in space—sorts of Aboriginal "mantras" transformed here into true sculptures.
