Niah Juella McLeod is a descendant of the Monero, Wandandian, and Yuin peoples of southeastern Australia. She is the daughter of Kathrin Sharp, a painter, and Bobby McLeod, an Aboriginal activist, poet, healer, musician, and elder of the Yuin people.

This work, entitled Gugaa with Ngudjung Yugarang, depicts Niah McLeod's clan totem, the stringy bark eucalyptus. It is a recurring motif in her work and can refer both to the concentric circles representing the rings of the stringy bark and to the texture of its fibrous bark.
