Originally from Central Arnhem Land, Bob Burrawal belongs to the artistic community of Maningrida, famous for the quality of its painted bark, wood carvings and remarkable work with plant fibres. This sculpture by Bob combines fibres and feathers and evokes the rituals celebrated to increase the number of certain animal species that his community feeds on. To this end, the Wurums, half-human, half-fish spirits, are called upon. It is said that they sometimes have fins on their legs and carry fish in woven bags. If the artist's family wants to have a bountiful catch, its members paint a Wurum on the side of a tree and then perform an incantation. The next day, the catch is supposed to be better.
