Mimih spirits occupy a central place in the mythology, culture, and art of the Aboriginal people of Arnhem Land in northern Australia.
They are air deities who live in rocks or caves.
Tradition has it that they were a kind of demiurge who gave birth to humans, instilled laws and customs in them, and taught them medicine, singing, and painting. It is even said that they depicted themselves on the vaults of the caves where they lived.
In addition to his traditional slenderness, the artist has exploited the curve of the branch he used to convey the suppleness of this airy spirit, which nevertheless has an imposing hieratic dimension here, due in particular to the features of a face reminiscent of a ritual mask with its eyes and mouth surrounded by sacred motifs. The elongated trunk is also painted with clan motifs made using natural pigments.
