The Mimih spirits belong to the Aboriginal mythology of Arnhem Land (northern coast of Australia) and are believed to live in the caves and crevices of the rocks in this coastal region. Tradition depicts them as slender beings that could be broken by the slightest gust of wind: by carving them from fragile tree branches, the artists who created these works have successfully captured this distinctive feature of their “models.” Using natural pigments, they also decorated the bodies and faces in the style of the ritual paintings with which the Aboriginals adorn themselves to celebrate the deities to whom they owe the art of healing, music, and dance, as well as the invention of painting.
